一、課程說明：

    本課程介紹美國古典實用主義的兩位創建者-裴爾士(Charles Peirce, 1839- 1914)、與詹姆士(William James, 1842-1910)-的哲學思想。兩人皆同意實用主義並不是一群哲學論點的集合，而是處理哲學議題的一種方法；但兩人對此方法之背後預設的看法、以及應用此方法的方式，卻存在有不小的實質歧異。裴爾士的哲學傾向於實在論，而詹姆士的哲學則傾向於唯名論。裴爾士將這方法主要應用在形上學、知識論、心靈哲學、及科學哲學等領域；而詹姆士應用此方法的領域則包括了道德、與宗教。仔細比較他們兩人的哲學思想，不僅有助於了解古典實用主義打從創生一開始即存在的多元與歧異；有助於了解當今所謂的實用主義各流派的差異，了解哪些思想流派真正承襲古典實用主義的主要論點；也可從研究裴爾士與詹姆士對相同哲學議題的不同處理方式，加深對這些哲學議題的了解。

    本課程除了閱讀這兩位哲學家的原典文章之外，也將閱讀許多當代作者對這兩位哲學家思想的詮釋文章。
