1、課程說明

本課程的主要目的，是要提供學生關於某些重要的哲學基本問題的認識，並透過對哲學典籍的研讀，使學生掌握基本的哲學思維能力。本課程將主要依照John Hospers的 An Introduction to Philosophical Analysis（1997年第4版）的架構逐一進行講授與討論，所要探討的主題包括：(1) Words and the world (language and reality); (2) What can we know? (knowledge); (3) What is the world like? (perceiving the world); (4) The way the world works (scientific knowledge); (5) What is and what must be (freedom and necessity); (6) What am I? (mind and body); (7) What else is there? (Philosophy of religion); (8) The IS and the OUGHT (Problems in ethics)。

在文本選讀方面，本課程將著重於易讀、容易引發興趣的探討基本哲學問題的文本，如：
(1) Knowledge versus Opinion (Plato, Republic, WP12-18);
(2) New Foundation for Knowledge (Descartes, Meditations, WP19-21;
(3) The Relation between Cause and Effect (Hume, Enquiry concerning Human Understanding, WP326-331);
(4) Causality and Our Experience of Events (Kant, Critique of Pure Reason, WP 332-335)
(5) Morality and Happiness (Plato, Republic, WP 361-365);
(6) Ethical Virtue (Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, WP 366-369);

此外，本課程亦將納入若干中國哲學文本，以資對照，藉以引發同學們對自身傳統思想的反省。

Peter K. McInerney著/林逢祺譯:《哲學概論》，台北：桂冠 1996。
 

4、教學方式
演講為主，討論為輔。哲學原典重要段落將要求學生翻譯或寫心得報告並在課堂上逐句解讀與分析。
 

5、教學進度

除第一週對「哲學是什麼」進行一般性的介紹外，第二週開始依照Hospers的架構一週介紹一個主題，並視情況插入文本之研讀與討論。
 

6、成績考核

平時成績佔45%；期末考試佔55%。修課同學亦可選擇只寫「期末報告」（佔100%），但選擇繳交期末報告者，必須在開始上課五週內與教師進行初步討論決定題目範圍與方向，並於期中考前繳交五頁左右的「期中報告」，再將期中報告逐步發展成為期末報告。
