Abstract:
卡特萊特為當代科學哲學最具代表性人物之一。自1983年出版其成名作：How the Laws of Physics Lie起，歷經近三十年，卡氏迄今不僅仍持續寫作，且迭有令學界注目的創見提出，其著作等身達七本專著與超過一百五十篇的學術論文。
卡氏擁有美國文理學院 (American Academy of Arts and Science)、英國學術院(British Academy)、與德國科學院(Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina (The German National Academy of Natural Science))院士頭銜，並且也是美國哲學會(American Philosophical Society)的會士與麥克阿瑟學者(McArthur Fellow)。卡氏並曾擔任美國哲學會西部分區(The American Philosophical Association, the west division)會長與美國科學哲學會(The Philosophy of Science Association)會長等重要的學術機構之行政職。
卡氏的研究專長在於科學哲學，尤其專注於與物理學哲學與經濟學哲學相關的諸多方法論、知識論、與形上學議題之探討。卡氏本人曾在美國史丹佛大學哲學系任教達數十年，與Patrick Suppes，Ian Hacking，John Dupré，與Peter Galison等著名的科學哲學家共同創立了具有跨學科性質的「實作之科學哲學」(Philosophy of Science in Practice)之「史丹佛學派」(The Stanford School)。卡氏於九零年代初轉往英國倫敦政治經濟學院與加州大學聖地牙哥分校任教後，在Latsis基金會的贊助下，於倫敦成立了迄今仍具相當學術影響力的「自然與社會科學哲學中心」(The Center for the Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences, CPNSS)。卡氏目前除仍任教於加州大學聖地牙哥分校之外，並於前年中接受英國德罕大學(University of Durham)之邀請赴校任教，並成立另一哲學研究中心：「關涉科學與社會的人文學中心」(Center for Humanities Engaged with Science and Society, CHESS)；該中心除了將延續CPNSS的有關物理學、經濟學、與一般自然與社會科學的哲學研究議題與傳統之外，也特別著重於「以證據為基礎的政策」(evidence-based policy)之本質與方法論等面向的研究。以卡氏在科學哲學的學養與影響力來評估，該中心將成為與政策研究相關的研究領域之研究重鎮。
