一、課程說明：本課程是哲學研究所的一門廣包性課程，目的在介紹當代科學哲學之核心的形上學與知識論議題；在形上學方面將會介紹「自然律」、「自然類」、「實在論與反實在論的爭論」等議題；在知識論方面將會介紹「涵蓋律模型」(the covering law model)與「最佳推論解釋」(inference to the best explanation)等有關科學解釋的問題、歸納法問題、以及「什麼是科學方法？」等議題。
本課程採用英國哲學家Alexander Bird所寫的教科書Philosophy of Science作為教材，以求能在短時間內讓修課同學掌握到上述這些議題當中彼此爭論的各造立場之主張。學期末的剩餘時間，將選讀科學哲學中的經典論文。

四、教學方式：根據教學進度授課，講課與討論並重。修課同學須選定二十頁左右的章節作一次課堂報告。

Weeks 4-5 “Explanation,” Chapter 2 of POS.
Weeks 6-7 “Natural kinds,” Chapter 3 of POS.
Weeks 8-9 “Realism,” Chapter 4 of POS.
Week 10 “Inductive scepticism,” Chapter 5 of POS.
Weeks 11-12 “Probability and scientific inference,” Chapter 6 of POS.
Week 13 “Inductive knowledge,” Chapter 7 of POS.
Weeks 14-15 “Method and progress,” Chapter 8 of POS.
Weeks 16-17 選讀經典論文。
六、成績考核：課堂報告、家庭作業、以及課堂表現︰50%；期末報告︰50%。
