一、            課程說明：

本課程的目標，是要探討在「近代國家」的興起過程中某些政治思想家（主要包括：Machievelli, Bodin, Hobbes, Pufendorf, Locke, Rousseau, Hegel, Mill, Marx）關於「國家」與「人民」的思想。我們將透過對這些思想家的著作的重要章節之研讀與討論，探討政治哲學中與此相關的一些重要議題，如：政治與道德、主權概念、個人與國家、社會與國家、權威與自由等。

Robert Brown (ed.): Classical Political Theories: From Plato to Marx, New York: Macmillan, 1990.（簡稱：I）

Mitchell Cohen/Nicole Fermon (ed.): Princeton Readings in Political Thought: Essential Texts since Plato, Princenton University Press, 1996. （簡稱：II）

將由這二本原典選集中選讀文本，在上課時發下。其他講義，亦將於上課時發下。

四、            教學方式：

以討論文主。每位選修學生必須讀完指定文本，於上課時繳交書面讀書報告，並參與口頭報告和討論。

13-14週：Mill （Selections from  On Liberty and The Subjection of Women, I: 420-465）

六、            成績考核：

平時上課表現佔 50%；期末報告占 50%。
