一、課程說明

「自然哲學」這稱號在當今（尤其是英美）幾乎被「科學哲學」所取代。這種發展趨勢大致有兩個相互關聯的根源：1. 自然科學的各個分科逐漸從哲學脫離；2. 德國觀念論之思辨的自然哲學與科學的自然觀相抗衡。德國觀念論的瓦解、實證科學對於自然之經驗研究的進展以及邏輯實證論在英美的得勢使得有關自然之理解與研究成為自然科學的專屬對象。科學哲學便成為有關自然科學的理論建構之方法論與知識論基礎的研究。這樣所理解的科學哲學不過是自然科學知識的後設理論。

由於我們關於自然之概念決定了科學的研究興趣與方法，反之，科學的研究進展也影響了我們的自然概念，所以，有關自然之哲學探究的主導問題便是有關我們的自然概念本身之理解與詮釋問題。這樣所理解的自然哲學不與科學的自然觀相違背，而是廣義而言，它包含了科學哲學（物理學哲學與生物學哲學），或者狹義而言，它可以作為科學哲學的補充。

本課程將探討從柏拉圖至康德的自然哲學之發展。所挑選的關鍵哲學家為柏拉圖、亞里斯多德、奧古斯丁、阿奎那、布魯諾、笛卡爾以及康德。我們將集中探討他們的自然概念。由此也將可以理解他們有關自然哲學中的一些具體問題，如時間、空間、物質、實體、運動、因果性、有機體等等。
